That Was a Quick'n

2-18-18

Mom transcribed the audio file Elder Mullins sent this week:

It was a good week.  We had Valentine’s day, and Chinese New Year.  We had blazing days.  We had rainy days.  It was freezing one day.  This week was kind of all over the place.
Tuesday night it was rainy so then we were all wet, then it got windy so we were cold.  We were going ham all day trying to find people to teach..and nothin’, nada, zilch…  We tried walking around the mall and found nothing.  Flashback*…3 weeks ago Elder McCusker and I are on exchanges.  We talked to this ripped Chinese guy and he wasn’t interested.  *Back to now…We decided to leave the mall to go home and study our language when all of the sudden a ripped Chinese guy came running up to us.  Elder Mickelsen had never seen him before.  It took me a minute and then I remembered this was the guy from China.  He whipped out his phone and told us he wanted our contact information, but he only spoke Chinese…no English.  Luckily, Elder Mickelsen and I both speak Chinese.  Ha Ha!  We gave him the Gongchis ( pass along cards?).  We have this app on our phone so we were able to communicate.  We exchanged contact information.  He had some good questions, but he wasn’t interested in the Gospel.  We got him with English class.  He ended up coming to English class, but I’ll talk more about that later.

Friday, we changed plans and went to the church to check on the English class.  The Chinese guy was there.  For some reason the people teaching English were upstairs, and downstairs the lights weren’t even on.  He was going to leave, because no one was there.  We told him, “let’s go upstairs”.  We ended up having a great English class.  We went to leave the church and a lady and her son showed up so we took them upstairs.  Then we saw a guy sitting in a car so we got him upstairs.  The only people at English class were only the people we brought.  They all had a pretty good time and they told us they would come back next week.  Those were some crazy miracles on Friday.
Rewind again…at the beginning of the week the days were freezing cold.  I was getting so cold I was shivering.  The second half of the week was blazing hot.  We got burned pretty bad.  We don’t have much to talk about Monday through Thursday, because all we did was contact, appointments fell through, and there was a lot of rain.

We woke up Friday morning with no plans since it was Chinese New Year, and it had rained all week.  We were sarcastically saying this is gonna be the best day…a day of miracles.  Then we prayed to find elect people that day and left the house.  The first person we talked to was elect…Boom!  The second one, not so much.  We asked him what the two most important things in the world were to him.  He said “house and water”.  We said, “That’s nice.”  We found a ton of people on Friday and we got way burned.  We taught the restoration 4 times.  It was so good!  Not to mention we decided to go to this random member’s house right when he was fixing his roof.  We didn’t stay too long, but we helped him out for a while.

Then we said a specific prayer that brought us specific blessings.  I asked God to bless us that the bus would be full so that we wouldn’t have to wait an hour for the bus to fill up so we could go.  We got to the bus and we were the last two people to get on.  That happened to us 3 or 4 times now.  The buses won’t leave until they are full so if you just miss the bus you have to wait about 40 minutes before the next bus will take off.  We even taught a restoration lesson on the bus.  Later we walking around this old campung.  We saw two kids who looked alike.  They were probably 10 years old.  They were twins and they ran up to us all excited.  We asked their names and the one said “Abah” which means “older brother”.  Then we asked the other one his name and he said “Adik” which means “Little brother”.   Then we taught these two sixteen-year-olds, the twins’ neighbors, Mackin and Kelvin.   They were way interested.  Kelvin asked golden questions.  He was one of those prepared people.  Then today we were walking to pick up another investigator who lives over there, and we saw Kelvin walking to church by himself with his Bible and a bag.  We asked him if he just walked by himself and if his family ever goes to church with him.  He said, “No, I go by myself.  I’ve been doing that for years.”  His money questions are like, “How can I better understand the scriptures?” or “How can I receive an answer to know that this is true?  How can I know what God wants me to do?”  We taught him and Makin again today.  After two days of having the Book of Mormon they read the first couple chapters.

Also, today the twins saw us walking to Makin and Kelvin’s house.  They asked, “Are you a part of the white tribe?”  We said, “Yeah we are the white tribe.”  One of them said, “I knew it!  You didn’t even have to say it.  I already knew you were white people.”  I saw a picture of you on my dad’s Facebook page and there was a picture of you.  I said, “I know those white guys.  They are from the church.”  I guess we are Facebook famous!

We found this Indonesian family.  We were ready to give up on finding people that day, because the sun was blazing hot.  We felt like we had already been in this place before.  Elder Mickelsen said, “Let’s give it this one last shot down this road.”  A guy came out and said, “Whoa, white people!”  No one in this campung had never seen white people before.  We asked if we could teach him and he said, “Yes, come on in.”  We taught him, his wife, and his son.  He came to church today!  When we were teaching them the son’s wife came out and was trying to conspicuously video us.  She got a video of us testifying and the Spirit was really strong.  Elder Mickelsen testified of Joseph Smith so she got the whole restoration lesson on video.  I don’t know what she’s going to do with it, but it was good.  Maybe she will indoctrinate people and we will have a million people at church next week.  We’re not sure how solid they are, but it was way cool.  We did get the dad to come with us to church today.

Today after church we started walking around that area again and a bunch of little kids were trailing us.  That is one thing that happened in Sarawak that doesn’t happen in Sabah.  I have really missed little kids trailing us.  In Sarawak we had thousands of kids follow us and show us where all the Christians lived.  In Sabah it’s less common.
Church today was way good!  President Ling gave a talk.  It’s Chinese New Year so we only had sacrament meeting.  It was packed.  His talk was high energy and really good.  He’s the District President.  He was talking about keeping the commandments which bring us blessings.  He was  throwing in Malay, Chinese, and English.  We had 7 or 8 investigators at sacrament meeting.  Sister Mimi is a legend and didn’t sleep much last night, because she was cooking for everybody.  We had this huge feast after church.  Sister Mimi cooked it all with 2 of our investigators.
Hope you all had a good Chinese New Year like we did.  Oh!  Chinese people always give you these red envelopes with money in them for the New Year if you are not married.  There’s a Canadian family who lived in China and they were here for the Chinese New Year.  They happened to have some of these red envelopes.  They gave us some and we were expecting like 5 ringgit, which is $1.  It was actually 20 times more than 5 ringgit.  100 ringgit for each of us!  That’s how much we spend on food in a week!  You can pretty much buy anything except a car for 100 ringgit.

Hope you all have a good week!  Love you all!

Elder Ben Mullins
